How do they feel about this so called miracle treatment? Well, we went out and asked clients what they thought about Botox, and their answers might surprise you.
Millie Wagner, who had just received a Botox treatment around her brow area...“Well, I casually asked my dermatologist about Botox and the removal of wrinkles, and he referred me to Atlanta Medical Day Spa. ” Millie noted how quick and painless the treatment was. “It was great, I just went in there waited a few minutes and it was done.” Several minutes after the treatment Millie was already impressed with the results, “You know, I can already tell the difference and I love it! (laugh) I see how people can keep coming back for treatments. What I like about Botox is that it is relatively inexpensive and safe as far as medical treatment goes and it gives me a little image boost.”

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX® is a highly purified medicine containing miniscule amounts of the protein produced by bacteria under precisely controlled laboratory conditions. BOTOX® is not alive but is a protein that weakens and inactivates muscles for several months. It is injected precisely where it is needed to relax the rigid muscles that cause wrinkles to form. BOTOX® is a great example of a natural product that is used for medicinal purposes. Bioengineering has made it possible and common for bacteria to produce treatments for medical and cosmetic procedures. Similar conversions produced by bioengineering include, but not limited to: fungi produced penicillin, cowpox virus produced a vaccine to smallpox, and foxglove plant produces the "poison" digitalis that treats millions of patients with heart disease.
BOTOX® Medical and Cosmetic Uses
BOTOX® Cosmetic first used in 1973 to treat patients who suffered from crossed eyes. The Botox worked to weaken the overactive eye muscle, thereby avoiding more invasive surgical procedures. This "breakthrough" procedure allowed BOTOX® Cosmetic to quickly gain acceptance for other ophthalmologic disorders including nystagmus and blephrospasm (involuntary spasm of the eyelids). Gastroenterology and neurology experts have explored BOTOX® Cosmetic therapy for their patients. BOTOX® Cosmetic is now a non-surgical therapy for spasmodic neck muscles, spasmodic laryngeal muscles, writer's cramp, certain tremors, tics, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, post stroke states, spinal cord injuries, nerve palsies, Parkinson's disease, and facial spasms. BOTOX® Cosmetic is used in GI cases involving swallowing and ulcer problems and to treat speech problems including stuttering and vocal cord spasms. BOTOX® Cosmetic also is used in genitourinary disorders of spastic bladder. Congential muscular disorders or acquired nerve injuries have been greatly improved with BOTOX® Cosmetic. Extensive BOTOX® Cosmetic research confirmed repeatedly a high success rate with minimal side effects using minuscule amounts of this new found "medicine." BOTOX® is now also a leading treatment option for many medical and cosmetic procedures.
Safety
While BOTOX® Cosmetic is a potent medicine in high concentration; it is used in small quantities with high margins of safety. After a muscle is injected, its full effects may no be seen for 24 hours up to 12 days as it relaxes the muscle. Thirty to Sixty Units of BOTOX® Cosmetic is generally used per session, depending on the number areas to be treated and the depth of the wrinkles to be injected. To have toxic effects on a patient, over 2,000 units would have to be injected at one time. BOTOX® Cosmetic effects are attracted only to muscles, and it has no effect on the central nervous system or on the body if injected into a nerve or blood vessel. BOTOX® Cosmetic is also safe because complete recovery of the muscle is possible, it just takes time. Recovery is due to the body's excellent ability to form new fibers that allow activation of the muscles.
The Procedure
BOTOX® will be injected into the designated areas with a small needle. The patient will then be instructed to perform exaggerated facial expressions for the first hour to stimulate binding (smile, squint, etc). The area should not be rubbed or manipulated, and you should not lie down to prevent moving the BOTOX® for the first four hours. The patient should also avoid vigorous exercise for four hours to prevent increased circulation while the BOTOX® is binding to the muscle. Re-treatment intervals depend on many factors regarding each individual. Re-treatment is usually in three to four months.
Complications
BOTOX® Cosmetic has minimal to no downtime. If a patient is on daily Aspirin it may cause a small bruise to form where the needle was injected that will subside in a few days. The injections are performed in designated areas and the toxic level is never approached. It is important for the Doctor who is injecting to have advanced knowledge of the facial muscles. It is possible to create a drooped feeling over the eyelids. However, here at Atlanta Medical Day Spa & Surgery Center, we avoid injecting into the muscles that will cause a downward pull forehead and inject the muscles that create upward movement.
Cosmetic Uses of BOTOX®
It is the function of BOTOX® Cosmetic to prevent the recurrence of wrinkles by inhibiting the underlying muscles. Crow's feet are wrinkles radiating from the corner of the eyes caused by smiling, laughing, or squinting. Horizontal forehead lines are caused by raising of the eyebrows. Wrinkles of the glabellar rhytids (between the eyebrows) are caused by scowling or focusing the eyes. All of these areas are easily treated with Botox® and have remarkable results.

These areas can be treated during the same office visit with no complications.

The application of ice helps to prevent bruising. Muscle weakness is not immediate and may take up to 12 days to take its full effect.

It can but this is unusual for cosmetic patients.

There have been no reported cases of a true allergic reaction in nearly 20,000 treatments.
What Happens If A Female Patient Becomes Pregnant Shortly Before Or After Treatment?
A number of neurological and ophthalmologic patients have delivered normal children after receiving their injections. However, once pregnant no more injections will be given.
How Painful Are The Injections?
The only pain will be the actual needle injection. Here at Atlanta Medical Day Spa & Surgery Center, we use a very small needle and we can apply ice or a numbing agent before the injection.
As A Patient, After Receiving My Injections How Can I Help BOTOX® Cosmetic Be More Effective And Avoid Side Effects?
Do not massage the area of the injection. Do not lie down for four hours. Use the muscle by performing exaggerated facial expressions to cause the muscle to contract, which will help bind the protein to the localized area and selected muscle for the first hour. Do not perform vigorous activity or straining for the first four hours following the injection.
Can BOTOX® Cosmetic Be Used To Weaken Not Totally Paralyze A Muscle?
Yes, in fact this is done so that the face will not be left expressionless. It can also be used to balance a weak muscle on the opposite side. By injecting BOTOX® Cosmetic into the subcutaneous tissue not the muscle, and by using a smaller dosage, a weakening of the muscles is more likely occur.
For The Deepest Frown Furrows What Is The Recommended Method To Get These Deep Lines To Disappear?
Re-injection every three to six months is recommended rather than waiting for the muscle to completely recover. This keeps the muscle weak and it will make a milder furrow. It takes approximately twelve months for the skin to completely smooth out. It is usually three to twelve months before a return of muscle movement occurs and additional treatments are necessary.
What Accounts For The Fact That No Treatments May Be Necessary In Some Patients After Repeated Injection Sessions?
This occurs because the after these injections the patient is no longer making these exaggerated expressions, therefore the lines are not being re-formed. The muscle will also not be used to making these lines and therefore it may take time for it to relearn how to perform them.
